Rise of Hawk, Part 4, Scene 4 * 4 *

David took the colorful ice-cream cones from the vendor's hand and turned around, giving one cone to young Wolf.  The boy looked at it as if it were some kind of strange insect that he'd never seen before.  David smiled and, with a gentle hand on his back, led his son away from the ice-cream truck on the pavement.  They walked up the short rise of a grassy hill and sat down on one of many park benches.  The boy hadn't touched the ice-cream cone, simply stared at the oddly bright colors.

"What is it called again, Dad?"

"A triple scoop ice cream cone.  The top scoop is orange chocolate

Two days later

Wolf left the Tower at 8am fully intending to do the recon for his mission before he went looking for his father, but he found himself standing in front of the Cathedral an hour after leaving base.

The Cathedral loomed over him.  Lines of black stone cut the edges of the building into towering angular sections.  Broad tiered steps led up to ancient wooden doors in front of him.  Ignoring the sense of being utterly swallowed by the great building, Wolf made his way up the stairs and pushed open one heavy door.

Wolf's mother, Dela, had pitch black hair that was straight as an arrow and cut squarely around her oval face.  Her dark brown eyes sparkled with her smile and small delicate fingers tickled his brother Mana in the ribs.  His father, Kana, picked his son up by the ankles, curly dark hair bouncing around his face, and lifted the boy clean off the cream colored carpet of their sitting room.   Wolf's brother Mana looked like them.  He had his mother's face and eyes, and his father's hair and hands.  Mana was growing into a strong, broad-shouldered boy, just like his father.

(Five and half years later)

"All parents share genetic traits with their offspring."  Triian smiled down at the young boy sitting on her lap, and tapped the glass cage on her bookcase.  Two six-legged lizards scurried over their rocks and into the tiny pool of water, but the third, the smallest, came right up to the glass behind her finger and stared at them with wide yellow slit-eyes.

"Look at this green horn-tail, he has red bands on his body and a red dot on his forehead.  The other two are his parents.  You can see that one parent has the red bands, the other the dot, but neither

End of the World?

"End of the world?"  Richard looked up from his newspaper.  "Bollocks!  The world will always be here.  What you really mean is it's the end of humanity!"

Dumping the paper down on the curb next to him he got to his feet.  "If the crazies with shotguns or the blasted zombies don't get us all, this waiting will!  I say lets go out with a little style!  What d'ya think, Mertle?  Shotgun or chainsaw?"

Unfortunately for Richard, the voice he heard answer him was nothing beyond his own mind because Mertle was in fact, an old microwave sitting on the street, with a smile drawn on her glass face in bright red lipstick.
"You're right!  Let's take both!"

I know, random.

I had writer's group today and the workshop exercise today was to look at a picture (of a man looking over a newspaper saying something), and then write a short thing about what he's saying and why. I thought the dude looked a bit bonkers and had zombie dreams last night so this was appropriate.

I thought I'd post it because as I read it back to the group it sounded funny to my ears.. you know that kind of funny where you either look at the person saying it with an uncomfortable expression on your face or you laugh with an evil undertone to the laugh.

To be truthful, I got more of the former than the latter... but I'm the youngest of that group by at least 40 years so that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

EDIT: I woke up this morning, it was cold and crappy; being the beginning of autumn here, and I went to my computer to check my messages. dA loaded and I looked at the 200-and-lots number of extra messages from last night, did a double take and scrolled down.

It packs a lot of personality for such a short piece. I would love it if Mertle did in fact somehow play a role in fighting zombies. :giggle:

Screamers will scream Screamers will scream

The place smelled like a public toilet: of the poorly maintained variety.  Jacob turned his nose up at the disgustingly damp corner and backed away.  The floor was covered with debris and rotting things he really didn't want to identify.  On one wall there was a single battered window.  Vines pushed through the broken glass and curled up and around the frame into the mouldy ceiling.  It was a strange thing to see the wild from outside in what had once been a family home.  A twist of rusted metal and springs under the window seemed to have once been a bed frame.Screamers will scream by *keyanadrake
My life is like a flower... Sarah had her eyes closed with her head up.  She listened and scented the air intently for dangers.  It was warm in the room.  The wooden pew she sat on was smooth, and somehow soft against the bare skin of her back.  The scent of burning wax and smoke filled her nostrils, and she could hear the candle flames flickering in the night breeze that drifted in through the open doorway behind her.

Somewhere to her left a voice whispered well-memorised prayers.  She could smell the fear in the priest who sat there.  Even he, an unsighted one, could sense the evil that stood in the room.
